“El miedo hace que los hombres que padecen cáncer eviten buscar ayuda“(From BBC News)
Un estudio sugiere que el temor a lo que los síntomas puedan significar evita que los hombres busquen ayuda médica.
Un equipo de la Universidad de Birmingham preguntó a 20 hombres con cáncer de próstata acerca del motivo que les había inducido a consultar con un médico.
Uno de los puntos clave fue que los hombres reconocían con frecuencia que podrían tener los síntomas de una enfermedad grave.
Pero pospusieron la visita al doctor por miedo al diagnóstico y el hecho de que no era de “macho” buscar ayuda, dijo el British Journal of Health Psychology.
El cáncer de próstata es el más común de los cánceres en el hombre, con más de 30.000 nuevos casos al año, un tercio de los cuales muere.
Afecta a la glándula de la próstata, que se encuentra cerca de la vejiga en los hombres y produce uno de los componentes del semen.
Los síntomas incluyen dolor al orinar o eyacular, sangre en el semen o en la orina y dolor en la parte baja de la espalda, caderas o muslos.

La presión de vivir según el estereotipo de que los hombres de verdad ignoran los problemas de salud fue normalmente mencionado.
El equipo dijo también que la posibilidad de tener cáncer produjo una ansiedad considerable entre los participantes y esta era la causa de que evitaran buscar información o minimizaran la importancia de los síntomas.

Fear ‘makes cancer men shun help’
Fear of what the symptoms of prostate cancer may mean stops men from seeking medical help, a study suggests.
A Birmingham University team quizzed 20 men with prostate cancer about how they made the decision to consult a doctor.
One of the key themes that emerged was that men often recognised they may have the symptoms of a serious disease.
But they delayed going to a GP because of fear of diagnosis and the fact it was not “macho” to seek help, said the British Journal of Health Psychology.
Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer, with more than 30,000 new cases a year – a third of whom die.
It affects the prostate gland, which is found near the bladder in men, and produces one component of semen.
Symptoms include pain when urinating or ejaculating, blood in the semen or urine and pain in the lower back, hips or thighs.
Researchers interviewed men aged 51 to 75 who all had prostate cancer.
The report said several themes emerged as to why they delayed seeking help.
Pressure to live up to the stereotype that real men ignored health problems was commonly mentioned.
The team also said the possibility of having cancer invoked considerable anxiety among participants and this caused them to avoid health information or minimise the seriousness of symptoms.

Diabetic girls “skip jabs to stay slim”

Thousands of teenage girls may be skipping insulin injections in the hope it will make them thin.
Diabetes UK estimates that up to one in three diabetic women under 30 in the UK are missing injections to help them lose weight.
That would equate to up to 5,000 women under 30, of which up to 3,000 are teenage girls.
The practice – which is sometimes called “diabulimia” – can have severe health consequences.

Miles de adolescentes pueden estar saltándose las inyecciones de insulina con la esperanza de que ello les ayudará a estar más delgadas.
Diabetes UK estima que una de cada tres mujeres diabéticas menores de 30 años no se inyecta para así perder peso.
Esto equivaldría a 5.000 mujeres de menos de 30 años, de las cuales 3.000 son chicas adolescentes.
Esta práctica, conocida a veces como “diabulimia”, puede tener graves consecuencias para su salud.

Una madre canadiense ha congelado sus óvulos para que su hija de siete años,que puede ser infértil, los pueda usar en el futuro.
Melanie Boivin quiere que su hija tenga la opción de tener hijos en el futuro. Si la niña optase por usar estos óvulos y conseguir la aprobación legal, tendría un bebé que sería su medio hermano o hermana.
Los críticos denuncian que este caso, presentado en una conferencia sobre fertilidad en Lyon es muy preocupante.
Pero los doctores del Centro de Reproducción McGill en Montreal, Canadá, califican la donación de acto de amor materno.
Añaden que la niña y cualquier futuro compañero tendrán la opción de elegir si quieren usar los óvulos o no.

A Canadian mother has frozen her eggs for use by her seven-year-old daughter, who is likely to become infertile.
Melanie Boivin wants her daughter to have the choice of having children in the future. Should the girl opt to use the eggs and gain regulatory approval, she would effectively have a baby that was her half-brother or sister.
Critics said the work, presented at a fertility conference in Lyon, was deeply concerning.
But the doctors from the McGill Reproductive Center, Montreal, called the donation an act of motherly love.
Also, the girl and any future partner would have a choice as to whether to use the eggs or not, they said.
